Our Story

Hearts Alive Zambia was birthed out of intense pain and grief when the Founder Mercy Namukwai Lost a 36 year old relative by suicide due to Domestic violence. 

Maggie Namukoko a beautiful intelligent and industrious young woman had suffered psychological,  economical, emotional, financial and sexual violence. She opened up to a few friends and her church  Family about having suicidal thoughts but none of them was willing to give her shelter for the fear of  being labelled home wreckers. 

Her husband refused to take her back to her family as that would break God's principles and urged her to  accept that way of living as her normal. 

On 1st January, 2017, around 4am, maggie ran out of her house after an argument with her husband, committed suicide by throwing herself in Sewer pond s, leaving behind a six month old baby. 

Having survived domestic violence herself, Mercy wrought with intense pain made a decision to build a  safehouse for women & their children fleeing domestic violence. 

And so BUKATA house has come to be.
